In-class journal:

Consider the social issues in the story I Stand Here Ironing and Maggie: A Girl of The Streets. Are these stories talking about the same issues in different ways? If so, how can an understanding of both stories better inform our understanding of the issue in question?  To begin, consider how these authors present characters, setting, set tone, ect.. [10-15 mins]

In-class Journal:

Out of all the stories we have read this semester, which one has best informed your understanding of the worlds of work and play?  Which story has appeared to be the least relevant, and why? Your answer should use example of character, setting, plot, tone, point-of-view. [10-15 mins]

Homework:

Pre-reading writing (1 page): Which specific social or cultural issues do you see as bearing directly on your professional aspirations?

Read:    Everyday Use by Alice Walker 457-466

Post-reading writing:  (1 page) Identify a specific social issue addressed in Everyday Use that connections to your understanding of the American Dream. If no connection is possible, explain why.
