Class Twenty-Three
[Video Pending]
In-class journal:
In your writing for today, you were asked to reflect on the American Dream. I want you to pick one of the stories we have read so far this semester and describe what version of the American Dream is represented in that story. Remember to use the concept of “point-of-view” to articulate your own point.[10-15 mins]
Come up with a statement about the concept of the American Dream as it is represented through specific points-of-view in the story you have selected. Again, your answer should make use of examples that draw from passages concerned with character, setting, tone, ect. [10-15 mins]
In-class Journaling:
Without using general language about “having the life you want to have,” describe to me what the American Dream means to you. [10-15 mins]
Homework: Re-read I Stand Here Ironing by Tille Olsen 446-455
Two-page guided argument: Identify specific details and descriptions in this piece that you think bear most accurately or inaccurately on the reality of the American Dream as you understand the term. This will require you to have a firm personal definition for the concept of the American Dream.
