In-class Journaling:

Look over your post-writing from the homework. How are the individual events that make up the plot connected? Identify three specific events in the story that connect two specific moments of the plot. Is play a part of these events? If so, how and why? (10 mins)

Next,

Chart out the plot of “The Untold Lie.

Mini-Lecture:

Now that we have thought about plot, we can begin to think about how an understanding of character, setting, and plot can inform our understanding of each of these subjects. Character and Setting often help us understand the specific events that tie together the individual events that make up the Plot of a novel.  At the same time, a consideration of Plot can lead us to greater insights into character and setting.  It is important to consider  a story from multiple angles: Character, Setting, Plot, etc…

Mini-Lecture in Action:

Look at The Untold Lie for these interconnected details, and find a way to describe their larger significance. (10 mins)

Homework:

Pre-Writing: Building off your in-class work, I would like you to describe in detail how an understanding of character in “The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry can inform your understanding of the story’s setting.

Re-Read

“The Gift of the Magi.”

Post-Writing:

Now that you have re-read  “The Gift of the Magi,” I would like you to explain to me what the most important specific details are in the story that relate to character and setting. I want you to tell me how an understanding of these details and an awareness of these details can help you better understand the plot of this story.
